FAQ's

What is core aeration and how will it improve my lawn?

Core aeration is the process by which “plugs” or “cores” of soil are removed from the lawn.  The subsequent holes allow the soil to move and become less compact.  This results in increased air circulation and water absorption; less water is lost, runoff is reduced and puddles may be eliminated.  Since the roots are able to move more freely they become stronger and your lawn becomes healthier.  Healthy lawns are more resistant to drought stress and as well as more resilient.

Sounds like a simple process doesn’t it?  Well it is, but you’ll be amazed at the overall improved health of your lawn.

How did my soil become so compact?

In newer homes, the topsoil is generally the soil that was displaced as result of the basement or footing excavation process.  The resulting soil has a higher clay content.  Clay is naturally denser which makes it difficult for roots to spread.  Children, pets, repetitive use and even water will compact soil.

How often should I aerate?

The typical lawn will benefit from aeration once a year.  Lawns with heavy use may benefit from a spring (March-May) and fall (August-November) aeration.

Are there any special considerations for an aerated lawn?

Yes, but only for the first two weeks.  You’ll want to water your lawn after the aeration, especially if temperatures are high and drought conditions exist.  If you plan to apply pre-emergent to your lawn, you’ll want to wait until after the aeration to do so in order receive optimal results.

What will my lawn look like after the aeration?

Immediately after the aeration your lawn will be find your lawn is full of small plugs/ cores that were pulled from the soil.  The cores will break apart and go back into the soil.  The spots where the plugs were removed will fill in with growing roots and soil.  After watering or rain, there will be fewer puddles and runoff on sloping lawns.  As time goes on your lawn will be able to go through longer spans between watering and show little to no signs of stress.  With routine (annual) aerations your lawn will show increased tolerance to wilting and drought stress.
